Zadel Barnes Buddington Gustafson (1841–1917) was an American author and journalist. ==Biography== She was born in Middletown, Connecticut as Zadel Barnes in 1841,〔 and early in her life began writing verses, stories and sketches. A paper by her in favor of the abolition of capital punishment attracted general attention.〔 For two years she was political editor of a Massachusetts journal. She wrote a tribute to the poet Bryant, and John Greenleaf Whittier wrote: “I can only compare it with Milton's ‘Lycidas’; it is worthy of any living poet at least. ” Her poem of ''Little Martin Craghan'', based on the true story of a boy lost in Pittston mines through an act of heroism, became very popular.〔 She married Henry Budington when she was 16, and they divorced around 1879.
